You may picture Miami and Los Angeles as sun-kissed coastal getaways, where you need nothing more than a t-shirt and shorts — and, for the most part, you’d be right. But on winter evenings, temperatures can drop to around 16°C in Miami and as cold as 8°C in Los Angeles, so don’t forget to pack jumpers and even a coat!

El Matador is considered by many as Southern California’s most beautiful beach; while the rocky beachfront may not be your typical spot for a relaxing day on the sands, it’s relatively sheltered from the crowds and makes a perfect spot for watching the sunset.

Keen surfers, meanwhile, will love Zuma Beach in Malibu, with its clean, wide patch of sand and surf, whereas families should head to Venice Beach, where its boardwalk offers plenty of entertainment and excitement for a day on the sand. 

Miami is known for its incredible shopping, from Florida’s largest mall to the boutique gems of South Beach – meaning keen bag buyers and clothes cravers will be in heaven during your Miami twin-centre holiday. We highly recommend Lincoln Road, where you’ll find over 200 boutiques, including all your favourite high street stores, from Sephora to Zara, as well as dozens of restaurants for a quick refuel. 

For designer stores, there’s no better place than Bal Harbour Shops, home to the likes of Chanel and Prada, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue. Or head to the Miami Design District, where you’ll find Dior, Balenciaga, and Tag Heuer.
 

Los Angeles seems to have a boutique or mall on every street, so you don’t need to look far to get your shopping fix. For the best one-stop shop featuring your favourite luxury brands, visit Saks Fifth Avenue in prestigious Beverly Hills, where you’ll find the likes of Saint Laurent and Alice + Olivia. For a more budget-friendly shopping trip, visit Glendale Galleria – a three- storey mall featuring all your high street favourites. 

Foodies will be in their element, as Miami’s cuisine is a fusion of cultural influences, combining Latin, Caribbean, and American flavours. But by far its most common cuisine is Cuban. Savour a classic Cuban sandwich made with ham, roasted pork, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread. Or enjoy a traditional Cuban breakfast at Latin Café on 42nd Avenue.

The city’s coastal location also makes seafood a common menu staple; make sure you try stone crab, particularly its claw, which is renowned for taste and texture.
 

Los Angeles has a dining option for every budget and occasion, meaning you’ll certainly be well-fed. For Michelin-starred dining, head to n/naka in Palms, where chef Niki Nakayama uses a classical style of Japanese cooking over a 13-course tasting menu. Or, for a more wallet-friendly date night option, head to Miceli’s in Hollywood – an old-school Italian spot that’s been serving up Italian comfort food since the 1940s. 

Families will love Joy, a casual and cosy Taiwanese restaurant that offers thousand-layer pancakes with egg and cheese, fruit shaved ice, and a fun atmosphere. Or savour brunch at Kitchen Mouse Café in Highland Park, with a delicious breakfast menu and a fenced play area for kids.

L.A. is known for its street food, too, and you can enjoy some of the best at Mariscos Jalisco here – a quartet of trucks slinging Jalisco-style seafood; we recommend the deep-fried shrimp tacos.
