Nature & Wildlife
Abundant with natural habitats including inland wetlands, forests and shorelines, the Florida Keys are loaded with an impressive array of wildlife, from alligators to wading birds and everything in between. Miami & Florida Keys FAQs
For the best relaxation and exploration weather, as well as fewer tourists, winter is the perfect time for Miami and Florida Keys multi-centre holidays. Between December and March, temperatures will have cooled slightly in Miami, but rarely drop below 20°C, and you can expect less rainfall too – meaning plenty of opportunity for sightseeing. You’ll also miss the hurricane season, which runs from 1st June through to 30th November – although most storms hit between August and October.
It’s a similar story in the Florida Keys. Visit towards late November to catch the end of the low season and cheaper prices. If you’re dreaming of a summer escape though, head to the Florida Keys in the shoulder season, May and June, when the temperatures consistently reach over 26°C but there are still less crowds.
The primary airport for UK tourists is Miami International Airport (MIA), with non-stop flights from London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW).
In the Florida Keys, major airports include Key West International Airport (EYW) but there is also the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport (MTH) for an alternative flight route via Miami or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
If you need flight advice for your Miami and Florida Keys twin-centre holiday, just ask our USA experts.
Yes, you can! Many travellers love driving from Miami to the Florida Keys, and it’s a journey that belongs on every bucket list. The route will see you follow the famous Overseas Highway – a 113-mile highway from Key Largo to Key West, with unforgettable views of the coral and limestone islands of the Keys. It’s a wonderful way to experience Miami and Florida Keys' twin-centre holidays.
We are proud to offer guaranteed prices up to 36 months ahead of your twin-centre holiday. You can secure your perfect package with an initial low deposit today and pay the remainder of your holiday in monthly instalments.
Picturing yourself wearing shorts and t-shirts as you explore Miami and the Florida Keys? Go for it – although maybe pack some waterproofs too! While Florida offers a subtropical climate, the rainy season runs from May to October in Miami and June to October in the Florida Keys. You may also want a jumper for cooler winter evenings, where the temperatures can drop to 16°C at night in Miami.
With over 15 popular beach spots in Miami, there’s something for everyone, whatever your vibe. For a family-friendly spot, head to Millionaires Row, North Beach, Normandy Isles, or the famous Miami Beach; here you’ll find calm waters and fun beach activities. For somewhere a little livelier, try South Beach, where you’ll find bars and restaurants. Or plan a multi-centre holiday in Miami and visit them all! You can view all our Miami multi-centre holiday options here.
You have fewer options in the Florida Keys, where you’re more likely to enjoy boating and diving than sinking your toes into the sand, but there are still some spots where you can get your beach fix. Smathers Beach is the biggest public beach in Key West, and unsurprisingly is also one of the Keys’ most popular. Here you can relax on the powder soft sands or try your hand at kayaking, windsurfing and more. In Marathon, head to Sombrero Beach, with its swaying palms and crystal-clear water offering an idyllic beach day setting.
Yes! A visit to the continental United States’ only coral reef system is an experience you surely won’t forget. Stretching almost 350 miles from the Dry Tortguas to the St. Lucie Inlet, the coral reef will see you snorkelling among the shallows, enjoying some of the country’s best fishing, or scuba diving in the deep. There are a few ways you can help protect the reef during your visit, including not touching or stepping on the reef, choosing mineral-based sunscreens, and recycling any rubbish you may have.
For upscale shopping, Bal Harbour Shops is not to be missed. Anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, it’s home to designers such as Burberry, Chanel and Gucci, and many more. For a more wallet-friendly option, South Beach’s famous Lincoln Road is where you’ll find your favourite high street stores.
Greater Miami is also home to the largest shopping centre in Florida, Aventura Mall, where more than 300 retailers are surrounded by a 93-foot-tall sculptural slide tower and dining options that rival the trendiest food halls.
Miami is known for its rich and diverse foodie scene, but with a long history of Cuban culture, you’ll find countless Cuban-inspired eateries offering a taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage. Join the queue of diners vying for a table at Sanguich De Miami on 8th Street, where a delicious marinated and spiced pork Cubano sandwich should be top of everyone’s order.
For a substantial Cuban menu that will take you from breakfast to dinner, visit Latin Café on 42nd Avenue, which serves everything from a traditional Cuban breakfast to tapas and ensaladas.
If you’re setting off on a Florida Keys adventure, plan in a bite to eat at Morada Bay Beach Café, which you’ll find on Islamorada at mile marker 81.6 – known for its delicious food and island atmosphere – or savour fresh conch fritters at the open-air Conch Republic Seafood Company in Key West.
Enjoy a romantic dinner at SHOR at the Hyatt Key West Resort, named by Visit Florida as one of the Keys’ best restaurants for date nights. Or, if you’re travelling with the kids, head to Le Creperie in Key West for a fun breakfast, where authentic French crepes and galettes are made in front of your eyes in a lively, upbeat atmosphere.
Each region of the Keys has its own unique character, making them perfect for a Florida Keys multi-centre holiday. For the best water sports, head to Key Largo – the first and largest of the Keys – or for a lively getaway, make the famous Key West your home-away-from-home, with endless activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained, from theatres and galleries to eclectic restaurants and live music bars.
If you’re travelling with your family, Marathon is not to be missed; the midpoint of the Florida Keys, it’s filled with activities for everyone, from golf and world-class diving to opportunities to swim with dolphins or visit the sea turtle rehabilitation centre.
Meanwhile, adults seeking an intimate escape surrounded by nature will love picturesque Islamorada, with eco-tours, historic hikes, and beautiful romantic vistas aplenty.
