Miami & Cancun FAQs
Miami & Cancun FAQs
Miami & Cancun FAQs
summer escape may seem tempting for multi-centre holidays to Miami and Cancun, but we recommend winter for more comfortable temperatures and to avoid the rainy and hurricane seasons.
In Miami, temperatures cool between December and March, but rarely drop below 20°C, and you can expect less rainfall too – offering ample opportunity for sightseeing. Cancun is similar, with the best time to visit between November and March. March is perhaps the most ideal time; it’s the driest month of the year and humidity tends to be at its lowest, making the 34°C more bearable.
Miami is generally 5 hours behind the UK, observing Eastern Standard Time (EST). If you’re travelling in March or November, look out for when their time zones change to Eastern Day Light Saving Time, as US clocks go forward or backward an hour on different Sundays than in the UK.
Cancun also observes EST, but Mexico no longer observes daylight savings times, meaning it is 6 hours behind the UK during British Summer Time and 5 hours behind during Greenwich Mean Time. This can be confusing, but our friendly team of experts are always on-hand to help with any questions if you’re unsure how this affects your Miami and Cancun multi-centre holidays.
The primary airport in Miami for UK tourists is Miami International Airport (MIA), which offers non-stop flights from London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW). In Cancun, you’ll fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). There are frequent flights between Miami and Cancun – perfect for your travel plans.
We are proud to offer guaranteed prices up to 36 months ahead of your twin-centre holiday. You can secure your perfect package with an initial low deposit today and pay the remainder of your holiday in monthly instalments.
If you’re imagining a holiday wardrobe of t-shirts and shorts for enjoying the best of Miami and Cancun, you’d be right, but depending on the time of year you visit, you may want to pack your waterproofs too. If you plan your holiday between mid-May and mid-October, you’ll be visiting during both cities’ rainy seasons.
You may also want to pack a light jumper for cooler winter evenings in Miami when temperatures can drop to 16°C at night.
With more than 15 popular beach spots in Miami, and plenty of smaller, more secluded coves, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to planning a beach day. Choose from the vibrance and liveliness of South Beach, lined with bars and restaurants in famous Art Deco buildings, to the peace of Sunny Isles Beach or Bal Harbour. And, of course, no visit is complete without a day at Miami Beach itself, where you’ll find a blend of calm waters and fun beach activities. Still can’t decide? Plan your twin-centre itinerary in Miami and visit them all! You can view all our Miami twin-centre itineraries here.
Cancun, meanwhile, has an abundance of options too. Playa Delfines, the destination’s largest, most popular and arguably its most beautiful beach, boasts ivory sands contrasted by vibrant turquoise waters. It’s nicknamed as Dolphin Beach for a reason, too, with the mammals regularly spotted off the shore. For a hidden gem, visit Playa Chac Mool, next to the party beach of Playa Forum; the secluded spot is a haven for relaxing with a good book or for enjoying a gentle swim in the crystal-clear waters. Enjoy both, and many more, with a curated Cancun twin-centre itinerary.
While beautiful year-round, Cancun beaches regularly see Sargassum (seaweed) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand each day, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be a little stinky in places where it isn’t removed. We recommend visiting from September to March to avoid this, or spending time on the islands of Isla Mujeres or Cozumel during these summer months, as they are largely protected from the seaweed.
es, you can visit the coral reefs; in fact, we’d say your Miami and Cancun multi-centre holiday wouldn’t be complete without it. The United States’ only coral reef system stretches for almost 350 miles, past the Miami coastline, offering incredible opportunities for snorkelling and diving. Head across the Biscayne Bay to Biscayne National Park, which is 95% water, and you’ll discover intrinsic corals and an abundance of marine life, from sea turtles and stingrays to manatees and dolphins.
Cancun, meanwhile, is home to some of the most impressive coral reefs in Mexico, with local authorities working to restore more than 20,000 coral reefs in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Head out on a coral reef catamaran tour and explore the crystal-clear tropical waters or join a snorkelling tour and see the wildlife. Joining a guided tour helps offer a safe and environmentally friendly way to visit and respect the local reefs.
Keen foodies will be in their element on a multi-centre holiday to Miami and Cancun, with both cities renowned for their rich dining cultures. In Miami, you’ll discover scores of Cuban-inspired eateries reflecting the city’s heritage; we recommend Sanguich De Miami on 8th Street or Latin Café on 42nd Street. For a family-friendly dining experience, head downtown to The Wharf Miami and savour delicious street food, from artisan pizzas to specialty burgers. Looking for a date night with a view? Amara at Paraiso on 7th Avenue boasts one of the best waterfront settings in Miami Beach, especially romantic at sunset.
The best restaurants in Cancun offer scenic seaside views, too – best paired with fresh seafood and, of course, a dash (or two) of mezcal. Sacbé Beach Shack, in front of the Marriott Cancun Resort, is a must-visit, with an unforgettable pairing menu curated by a certified mezcalier. Or, for a budget-friendly street food vibe, visit Parque de las Palapas in Centro, which by night is filled with food stands selling a huge range of local cuisine; we recommend the marquesitas (like a sweet cheese stuffed waffle roll)!
You can’t visit Mexico without a trip to the most famous spot in the Yucatan; Chichén Itzá is a 2.5-hour drive from Cancun and is well worth the journey. The Mayan ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Explore the ruins of the ancient city, which was home to 35,000 at its peak, and discover the incredible El Castillo Pyramid and the imposing Temple of Warriors.
Don’t want to journey that far? You can see smaller Mayan ruins in El Rey, just south of Cancun – rumoured to have been a royal retreat or playground. Discover two old temples, said to have been used as a watchtower and lighthouses, and meet the iguanas that now call the site home (just don’t try to feed or pet them!).
