If you like water, then Michigan holidays are for you. You'll never be more than six miles from it wherever you go in this state, and four out of the five Great Lakes are on the doorstep too. Together that makes for a whole lot of shoreline as well as a string of sandy beaches to relax on - especially around Lake Michigan.
There are plenty of spectacular sights to see right across Michigan, and that goes for both the wilder Upper Peninsula and the gentler 'Mitten' Peninsula. Even the bridge that links the two, one of the longest suspension structures in the world, is dazzling. North at Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior, you'll see cliffs dramatically weathered into shapes resembling castle turrets and rocky human faces. And further south at Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan there's 40-metre dunes, with the chance to scramble up for superb views.
Michigan's cities and towns have a lot to offer too, and the urban vibe of Detroit comes complete with great shopping, top restaurants, and a string of attractions dedicated to its motor and Motown history. Elsewhere, Grand Rapids has cosmopolitan cool and a great arts scene; Traverse City offers top lakeside beaches, great golf and a buzzing downtown; and quirky Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan, prides itself on being not quite like anywhere else.
That means there's something for everyone on Michigan holidays. For wilderness fans, there's acres of forest where moose roam, as well as State and National Parks to hike through; beach lovers can chill along miles of sandy shores; sailors and paddlers can find a stretch of water pretty much everywhere; and urban types have plenty of city action to choose from. That way, everyone's happy.
