Close to New York and even closer to Philadelphia, Atlantic City is the East Coast's playground - a 24-hour party people mix of beaches and casinos. Sure Vegas has the glitz - but so do holidays in Atlantic City, where you can work on your tan during the day, and then party by night. With a fine stretch of sand, sparkling ocean, a whole host of attractions and some of the best night-life you'll find anywhere, why go West Coast when you can go East?
The four-mile-long Boardwalk is where most of the action is on holidays in Atlantic City. The pride of the city since 1870, it's packed with every kind of entertainment and home to a string of mega casinos. Strolling its length with a bag of salt-water taffy is a must - or save your legs and cruise along in a trademark 'rolling chair' instead. The Boardwalk bustles with people day and night, and there's shops, restaurants, bars, and any other number of places to be discovered.
A voyage of discovery is what Atlantic City's twelve casinos are all about, too. There's some big names here, including Caesar's, Harrah's and Bally's, as well as some extravagant theming. Caesar's channels Ancient Rome; the Trump Taj Mahal is a lesson in Indian exotica; and at the Cuban-themed Tropicana it's like being whisked off to Havana. Even if you're not a fan of the tables, you'll want to spend time enjoying the resorts' shops, spas, restaurants and multiple other entertainments.
Plus there's plenty more to do besides. Catching a movie at the Tropicana's huge IMAX screen is guaranteed to leave a big impression; the kids will love the aquarium; and everyone is charmed by the quaintly retro amusement rides of Steel Pier. Who needs Vegas anyway?
