Alabama has both looks and substance. This beautiful state is defined not only by its green mountains, cotton fields, antebellum architecture and sun-splashed beaches, but by the things that have happened here. Scratch beneath the surface on Alabama holidays and you'll discover that Civil War history, the struggle for civil rights, the stuff of musical legends and 21st-century space technology are all woven into the very fabric of the place.
If you've chosen Alabama holidays to get in touch with the Great Outdoors, then you've chosen well. There's hiking in the Appalachian mountains, caves to explore, white water rafting on the Chattahoochee River, and a riot of azaleas and dogwoods right across the state in springtime. There's also white-sand beaches to laze on all along the Gulf Coast and superb golf - all 468 holes of it along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
That's modern Alabama, but there's also a lot of the past here too. Montgomery was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and there's a slew of sites to visit including Mobile Bay, scene of the famous sea battle. In between there's graceful antebellum plantations, reminders of the state's cotton producing heyday; the hometowns of great American writers like Harper Lee and Truman Capote; and relics of Alabama's rich musical history, from the days when big name artists recorded here.
Civil rights also have a big part to play on Alabama holidays, and there's a string of places that chart the long struggle fought by famous names such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, as well as ordinary citizens, along the Civil Rights Trail. 'Sweet home' Alabama most certainly is - but one with a fascinating story to tell, too.
