The Deep South is synonymous with great hospitality, incredible music, and lip-smacking, stick-to-your-ribs food. Dishes vary from state to state with regional favourites championed by those who live there, swearing their mama’s recipe is the best. We certainly believe them. If you haven’t got the luxury of home cooking, you’ll find heaps of restaurants throughout the south.
You’re sure to find pit smoked BBQ, buttery sweet pies and the most delicious fried foods. Restaurants are casual, serving hearty portions and boast a laid-back atmosphere. Foodies will rejoice in the mouth-watering dishes, loaded with sauce, crunch and hunks of flavour.
And with plenty of delicious options throughout the Deep South, we give you a low down of what y’all MUST ABSOLUTELY try.
Po Boys

A New Orleans native sandwich, fully loaded with meats or fish and fries. It’s delicious and chock-a-block with flavour. Try one at Killer Po Boys, we’d go for the glazed pork belly with lots of garlic aioli every time.
Killer Po Boys started off as a pop up in New Orleans and due to their delicious success, they’ve got a permanent spot in the city. They have two locations, their original can be found in Erin Rose Bar and their new store is conveniently located in the French Quarter.
BBQ

The people in the Deep South don’t muck about when it comes to BBQ food. They have competitions and championships, they take it super seriously. Just think of every meat smothered in herbs and seasoning then cooked low and slow. Mouth-watering, isn’t it?
If you want the full pitmaster experience, you must visit Peg Leg Porker in Nashville. Located in the centre of the city, stop by for dinner and have a drink in the bar. Ribs, pulled pork and chicken all feature on the menu, as well as a collection of sides like mac and cheese, fries, BBQ beans and coleslaw. Come hungry.
Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q is equally delicious and can be found in Atlanta. Choose from intensely delicious slow-roast ribs, pulled pork and heaps of Southern sides like fried okra, collard greens, baked beans and fries.
Fried Chicken

If your experience of fried chicken has just been of KFC, you’ll be in for a treat. Sure, KFC originates from Kentucky and it’s delicious, but you’ll find a whole host of authentic chicken all over the South which blows it out of the water.
